Home brew bottles

Picture
When you are about to bottle your first batch of home brew it can be a struggle to find enough bottles. You’re going to need enough bottles to contain 23 litres (the standard amount a home brew kit will produce).
Don’t worry though, it’s home brew.. you can improvise!

For my first batch of home brew I used 12 2L fizzy drinks bottles which I had horded over the previous couple of weeks, saving your home brew in 2L fizzy drinks bottles might not be the height of class and sophistication but it does the job!

Plastic bottles work fine for storing home brew. They also have the added bonus that if you over carbonated your home brew you won’t have exploding glass bottles lying around. I prefer to bottle home brew with 1 litre glass screw cap bottles which I have accumulated over the years, but if you can find dark coloured glass or plastic litre bottles they are the ones to go for. After your home brew has been bottled it is best to keep them out of light so dark coloured bottles are great.

Of course you could always re use beer bottles and purchase a beer bottle capper to seal them. Beer bottle cappers can be purchased from pretty much every home brewing shop there is. I have been again hording my empty beer bottles and will be purchasing a capper when I purchase my next home brewing kit.
